1. Do free activities
There are a ton of free things that you can go out and do or even do at home. Spend the night in and pamper yourself.

Check out a new part of the city that you’ve never been to before. If you live in a coastal city go to the beach or walk the pier. Maybe go hiking or check out a local park? Play sports with some friends or just go for a walk. Check out movies and books from the library. Write or paint. Sometimes there are free museums or festivals in your city.

Most cities have lots of activities that you can do for free. Pick up a local newspaper or city guide and there are usually lots of activities that are coming up soon and many of them are free, or very inexpensive.

2. Look for deals
Why pay full price when you can wait a couple days for a sale? Or maybe there is a coupon online you can use to save a few dollars?

Many things you do or buy on a regular basis like oil changes, clothes shopping, grocery shopping, restaurants and household items are all things you can save a lot of money on with coupons. You can save hundreds on items like furniture, clothes, shoes, TV and computers if you wait for a sale.

Some really good items can be purchased at dollar stores such as Dollar Tree for only $1. You can get basics such as household items or great gift items!

3. Walk more often
If you’re just going down the street to grab a couple things from the store, why not walk? Not only is it good for your body and the environment, it’s also good for your wallet. Every time you start your car it burns gas. Gas these days isn’t cheap. It might seem like it doesn’t make much of a difference it will over time. Especially if you are able to walk to work or school on a regular basis.

Plus, you are saving on wear and tear on your car so it will ultimately last longer.

Another option is to ride a bike if walking is not an option. You still be getting all the benefits but you’ll be able to travel a little bit further.

4. Split the cost
If you have a roommate then you’re already a step ahead by splitting your biggest expense, rent! If you can, also split the cost of food, utilities, internet and household items. Sometimes it even makes sense to get a family plan for you phone with people you trust since it’s cheaper than having individual plans. Everyone will save money.

If you want to do something fun or try a new restaurant, take a friend with you and split the bill. A lot of times there are discounts for multiple people or you can get a bigger serving and it will end up being a lower cost for each since if you share. Or you want to watch a movie at home, you can bring the pizza and they can bring the wine.

If everyone brings something you’ll usually all end up with more.

5. Direct deposit money into a hard to access savings account
One of the best ways to save money is to forget about it. If you have a set amount direct deposited each week into an account that you don’t have easy access to then you’re less likely to spend it. And then if something comes up and you need money, you’ll hopefully be pleasantly surprised at the amount you have saved up.

The best way to do this is usually to set up an account at a different bank or credit union than your main one. And make sure you do not carry a debit card that is attached to the account because that makes it easy to access.

6. Make meals and coffee at home
You’ve heard this a million times but it is one of the best and easiest ways to save money. One of the easiest ways to waste money is on food and drinks. If you eat out for 3 meals a day and spend even just $5 on each meal that’s $105 a week! The truth is most people spend closer to double that.

Coffee and a breakfast sandwich can cost about $10. Lunch at that nice little place across the street still cost $8 even with the special price, plus you wanted that cookie… And then dinner and drinks with co-workers cost closer to $30.

Even just switching to a refillable water bottle and not buying bottled water anymore can save you close to $50 a month.

Just think of all the money you are spending without even thinking about it and then think of all the money you could be saving.

7. Turn off the lights
When you leave your house or leave the room, turn off the lights. Electricity isn’t free and you can end up with a hefty electric bill if you leave your lights on all day and night. And why pay for that if you’re not even home to enjoy it or if you’re sleeping?

The other thing to remember is you’re air and heat. If you leave the air conditioner on all day while at work, you’ve just spent money that you didn’t even get to enjoy. Take a second to remember to turn it off when you leave the house or before bed and you can end up saving a lot of money.
