Random acts of kindness come in all sizes. They can be small or big or somewhere in between. The important thing about them is that they are done randomly and kindly, hence the name.

If you go and do an act of kindness and you are thinking about how the other person owes you a favor now then that was not a random act of kindness. They are done for no real expectation other than just to be nice to someone else.

There are many reasons and benefits why you should do something randomly nice for someone, and don’t wait, do it today.

1. You could make someone’s day
You have no idea if your small act of kindness actually makes someone have a great day. Buy a meal for a homeless person and it could be the best or only meal they’ve eaten in weeks. Offer to babysit for your neighbor so she can have a date night with her husband and you could actually be giving them quality time that saves their marriage. Even just a simple smile at someone who feels like no one cares about them could lift their spirits and give them hope.

No matter how big or small the act is, you never know what impact you could have.

2. It could have a spiral effect if they pay it forward
Everyone has heard stories about, or maybe even experienced, when you’re in the drive thru and then when it’s your turn to pay for the food they tell you that the person in front of you has paid for you it. Sometimes they give you a business card asking you to pay it forward. What that means is now you have to do a good deed for someone. Then you give them the card and they do something for someone else.

There are also variations of three, where you do three random acts of kindness and then ask those three people to do three acts of kindness as well and before you know it the world is full of kindness, at least in theory.

Even if your act of kindness doesn’t affect the whole world, you might make a big difference in your community by doing something kind and asking them to pay it forward.

3. It makes you feel good
Yeah, this kinda a selfish reason to do something kind, but if you are feeling down, doing something kind for someone else can make you feel better.

That catch is, in order to get the good feeling, you have to do the giving out of a place of kindness. You can’t do something nice for someone expecting something back in return because then you will just be disappointed. You must do it with no expectations other than to make someone else feel good and chances are, you will feel good too.

4. It makes you feel like you have more than enough
Not only does giving make you feel good, it also makes you feel like you have more than enough. Think about it, when you don’t have much you don’t give much. If you have plenty, you tend to give more because it’s no big deal, you have more than enough to go around.

Allow yourself to feel this way when you give. If you are asked for a donation at the grocery store, say yes because it’s no big deal and you have more than enough. This ultimately gives you a feeling of self empowerment and gratitude for being able to give so much.

5. You are adding more good to the world
There are so many bad things that happen all the time that are out of our control, but, one thing we do control is how kind we are. You decide if you want to share or be nice to each and every person you meet.

How you treat them is what you are putting out into the world. Make sure what you are putting out is goodness and kindness and I bet, you will see more goodness and kindness in your own life.
